The future of socialising may be alcohol-free
Australia has always prided itself on its drinking culture. No one is ever surprised if you drink a little too much or get a little too wild. Sometimes it’s even expected...
But it’s no secret that in the past two years, we’ve seen a massive shift in people’s attitudes. As the 2020 lockdowns went on, people started to use that time to build a healthier lifestyle; to cook at home, exercise more, and cut back on drinking.
So what does this mean for the future of socialising? What will socialising look like now that plans are being made for life to go back to ‘normal’?
Firstly, I have no doubt socialising will include more alcoholic-free drink options. The alcohol free community has grown sooo much in the past two years alone. Non-alcoholic beer sales have more than doubled in the past year. Major retailers like Woolworths & Dan Murphy’s are expanding their non-alcoholic drinks ranges to keep up.
But it’s not just about the alcohol-free drinks. It’s about the shift in mindset. The number of young people in their 20s reducing their alcohol intake has increased from 9% in 2001 to 22% in 2019. There is a generational shift in how we are viewing booze. People are starting to realise they can have fun without that social lubricant of booze! And so socialising no longer revolves around alcohol.
Bring in the ‘Sober curious’ and ‘mindful drinkers’
Socialising used to be you’re either drinking or not drinking - there was no in between being sober and being a binge drinker. But now, the words ‘sober curious’ and ‘mindful drinking’ have solidified their places in people’s vocabulary.
Read more about mindful drinking.
We’re moving away from the extremes of sober and binge drinking, and finding a healthy moderation as a society. We’re sick of the hangovers, of not being able to go out and be our true selves. People have always wanted to live life to the fullest, but now we see it’s not necessary to have alcohol to do so.
Mindful drinking is associated with better health, sense of self-determination, empowerment, and success.
Overall, there is less of a stigma around not drinking 1. People are embracing the healthy, mindful lifestyle and 2. There are so many more AF options that actually taste good!
So the future of socialising in one word? Mindful.
