No Hangover Club: Nikki Popkow
As a veteran bartender, with over 16 years behind the bar, it was kind of a shock to most people that I decided to put the bottle down. I played in bands around Los Angeles, did burlesque in my early twenties, worked at shithole dive bars with bartenders so drunk, sometimes, they couldn’t finish their shifts. In almost 2 decades of slanging drinks, I had probably done and seen it all. The question that’s always asked is “What Happened?”. The truth is “What DIDN’T happen?” It all did! Drunken nights, blackouts, questionable encounters with questionable people and too many hangovers to count. I just had enough. Along with being fed up, I reach a level in my spirituality that some call a ‘Spiritual Awakening’… and that’s what REALLY did it.
What I didn’t know when I stopped drinking, is that I could stop drinking the poison but still put my skill set of bartending to use. I could create libations just without the consequences. I didn’t know that if you stopped drinking, you could also not identify with being an addict. I didn’t know there was a whole community of people that existed that just wanted to make powerful choices of self love and self care. People that are not conforming to the social norm by consuming ethanol.
The lightbulbs really went off when I read an article on Facebook about SoberBars. Literally, I still feel chills, it was like rediscovering a world I knew but in a whole new, exciting, and positive way. Non-alcoholic CRAFT Beer? Non-alcoholic spirits?? A sober bar in DUBLIN?!?! It’s safe to say I was this emoji : 🤯
What I have seen grow in just this past year is incredible. What a time to stop drinking!! The stigma is being broken everyday and so many people are getting hip to the idea that you don’t need the booze to be hip! (Quite the opposite). Nothing is cute about drooling, puking, stumbling, being cross eyed or angry, dehydrated, bloated… I mean, the list goes on. I think people are starting to see that. These companies that are pioneering this movement are literally changing the world, for the better.
