Is non-alcoholic beer healthy for you?
Did you know there is more to non-alcoholic beer than just the fact that, well, it has no alcohol?
Being alcohol-free is the obvious health benefit of drinking non-alcoholic beer. Drinking any alcohol in general is linked to negative health effects. In Australia, it is recommended to drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week, and no more than four standard drinks in one day, in order to reduce the risk of negative health effects like high blood sugar (with moderate drinking) or low blood sugar (with excessive drinking), liver disease, weight gain, cancers, and even death. So of course drinking non-alcoholic beer will be better for you!
But there is definitely more to non-alcoholic beer than just its lack of alcohol. And some of these might pleasantly surprise you.
Benefit #1: Full of helpful vitamins and minerals
Since alcohol-free beer has the same ingredients as regular beer, its full of polyphenols from the barley and hops. Non-alcoholic beers can have over 50 different minerals and vitamins in them like Vitamin B12, potassium, iron, and zinc helping you with gastrointestinal health and controlling bacterial growth.
Benefit 2: Helps athletic performance!
There are actually a lot of studies out there showing how alcohol-free beer has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties - helping improve blood circulation. Some non-alcoholic beers even contain electrolytes that help absorb water. So many are saying you can drink alcohol-free beer after exercise for recovery. Even athletes are using it! So yep, people are marketing it as a sports drink!
Benefit #3: Can help you cut down on your alcohol intake
Alcohol-free beer has been developed to taste just like the real thing. This means the body associates the flavour and smell with full-strength beer, and you still get the same dopamine and feeling of reward you get when drinking real beer. Just without the negative effects!
But at the same time, the fact that it does this can trigger current and recovering alcoholics. It’s advised to avoid non-alcoholic beer if you think it will trigger you into wanting to drink the real thing.
Benefit #4: Is natural
If you’ve read how non-alcoholic beers are made, you might have realised how natural non-alcoholic beers are. They are good alternatives to other alcohol-free alternatives that are full of artificial sweeteners and additives - so you can enjoy it guilt-free!
