Gift ideas to celebrate an alcohol-free milestone

Saying no to alcohol can be very hard. Not giving in to the pressure that society creates around drinking can be very hard. So whether it's after one year, or just one day, going alcohol-free should be celebrated!

Whether it’s for a friend, or for yourself, it doesn’t matter. Here are some thoughtful gift ideas to say “hey bud, I’m proud of you. You’re doing a good job!” They’re there to remind that person of not only how far they’ve come in taking back their lives, but how much better they feel without the alcohol.

A little something can go a long way in making someone feel good. And of course, there’s no better feeling than being that supportive, understanding friend. The right kind of encouragement (not the “c’mon just one drink” kind) can make all the difference!

Idea # 1: Journal or diary

Often when we go alcohol-free we also become more reflective of our journey; what we like, what we don’t like, how we’ve changed, how we want to change more. Journals and diaries are a great gift in helping someone feel even more in control of their own lives. It’s also a form of catharsis and distraction. And who doesn’t love some sleek new stationery?!

Idea # 2: Donate to charity

Maybe they’re not one to accept gifts. But, maybe since starting their alcohol-free journey they’ve become more in tune with bettering not only their lives, but the lives of others. You could always find out what kind of charities they value and make a donation in their name and give that to them as a gift.

Idea # 3: Customised gift

You might think it’s TACKY AS HELL, but a customised mug, bracelet, key chain or picture frame can actually be a really good way of showing that you support someone on their journey and you’re happy that they’ve made these decisions to better their lives! You can have a custom message or a start or end date put on pretty much anything and it’ll show your friend you’ve put thought and effort into them. It also gives your friend a daily reminder of their accomplishment. Spread that positivity!

Idea # 4 Houseplants

One big confidence booster is to take care of things. Looking after house plants is an easy way to release serotonin because it connects you to your nurturing side and to nature. And they LITERALLY remove the toxins from the air. So you feel lighter, healthier and happier all around!

You could even make this gift giving idea into a tradition - one more anniversary, one more succulent! Just make sure you give the receiver some instructions and let them know that if the plant doesn’t make it, that’s okay, it just takes practice!

Idea #5: A getaway

We preach this all the time, but one of the best things about going alcohol-free means more time being PRESENT and experiencing everything with a clear mind. Going on a cute little getaway is a good way to enjoy what life has to offer. It could be an overnight trip to a far-away land, or just a day trip around the city or a hike in nature. Whatever you feel will be a great reward for their hard work!
